2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series preview: Dover 1

It is going to be a busy weekend at Dover International Speedway as both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Cup Series host doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The Xfinity Series will kick off the weekend with the Drydene 200.

Dover is a one-mile oval, hence why it is given the “Monster Mile” moniker. The high speeds going into the steep corners create heavy load on the front tires, which will make tire wear a major factor for both races this weekend.

Austin Cindric has been on a tear in the dog days of summer as he has won five of the last six races. He took the victory at the Daytona road course in the most recent race. While Cindric only finished eighth at another one-mile track in Phoenix Raceway, Dover has been kind to the Team Penske product as he has the best average of all active Xfinity Series drivers at 6.5. He has scored a top-10 finish in each Dover start and finished third in the last race back in October 2019. Cindric will roll off from the pole Saturday afternoon.

Noah Gragson joins Cindric on the front row Saturday afternoon. He has two top-10 finishes in three career Xfinity starts at Dover.

After Cindric’s recent streak, Chase Briscoe now sits second in points behind Cindric. Both men are battling it out for the regular season points championship and the fight for most wins this season. Last season, Briscoe scored fifth-place finishes in both Dover races. He will look to get back on track after finishing outside the top 10 in two of the last three races.

The playoff cutline has thinned down recently in the series. The battle is now between Brandon Brown and Jeremy Clements for the 12th spot.

Brown is on the positive side of the cutline as he sits 28 points ahead of Clements. Last year, Brown had two top-15 finishes in the Dover races. He will start 21st on Saturday.

Clements earned a seventh-place starting spot after a solid run at Daytona last weekend. He finished 18th and 36th, respectively, in last year’s races at Dover.

TV coverage for the race will begin at 12:30 p.m. EST on NBC Sports Network. The Motor Racing Network will provide radio coverage.
