Through rain squalls, wet tires and late-lap cautions, Austin Cindric would prevail and pick up the victory at Road America Saturday afternoon.
The win is Cindric’s fourth of the season (Kentucky twice and Texas). The win is also Cindric’s third career road course victory in the Xfinity Series (2019 Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio).
Cindric would quickly take the lead through turn one on lap one and maintain it through a Bayley Currey caution on lap two. While Cindric would keep the lead after Daniel Hemric brought out another caution on lap seven, the red flag would come out on lap 10 due to lightning strikes.
The field would return to the track after a 90-plus minute delay.
While Justin Haley would get by Cindric on the outside through turn one on the restart, Vinnie Miller would spin out and bring out the caution once more. On the ensuing restart with one to go in the stage, Haley would take the outside lane and maintain the lead over Cindric and Chase Briscoe to collect his second stage win on the season.
Josh Bilicki would begin stage two as the leader and would quickly retake the lead from Preston Pardus after one lap. While Noah Gragson would take the lead, he would spin on the track and give Alex Labbe the lead on lap 21.
A.J. Allmendinger would shoot ahead over Labbe one lap later and would hold the lead through the conclusion of stage two. The stage win would be Allmendinger’s first of the season.
Kaz Grala would begin the final stage as the leader but would quickly fade to Justin Allgaier. Cindric, meanwhile, would quickly gain from behind and retake the lead on lap 34.
Cindric’s second lead of the day would swiftly create more difference than his first lead, as the No. 22 would rocket ahead to a three-plus second lead with eight to go. Allmendinger, meanwhile, would utilize his fastest laps of the day to vault back to second.
The field would clump back together after Scott Heckert would get stuck on the track after spinning out on lap 39. However, the restart with four to go would quickly morph into another caution, as Allgaier would get clipped and slam into the concrete wall.
Cindric would get back into first on the restart with two to go and hold off Allmendinger to pick up the victory.
Allmendinger would finish second. It would be Allmendinger’s fourth top-five finish of the season. In Allmendinger’s nine career top-five finishes in the Xfinity Series, six of those have come on road courses.
Grala would finish fourth. The finish would be Grala’s fourth career top five finish in the Xfinity Series and his second consecutive top five finish at Elkhart Lake (he also finished fifth in the 2019 Road America installment).
Andy Lally rounded out the top five, which is second career top-five finish in the Xfinity Series.
Michael Annett, who started on the pole, finished 10th. Annett has now finished in the top 10 in his last seven Xfinity races.
The Xfinity Series will continue its season with another road course event next weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
