2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series preview: Road America

After getting last weekend off, the NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action and will race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin Saturday.

While six drivers are currently locked into a playoff spot, seven positions remain up for grabs. As the meat of the schedule continues onward, drivers will continue to solidify playoff position or achieve a coveted spot among the playoff field.

Michael Annett will start on the pole at Road America. In seven career Xfinity races at Road America, the 34-year-old for JR Motorsports has finished inside the top 10 twice. Annett currently sits eighth in the points standings (510).

While Ross Chastain sits fourth in points (662), the No. 10 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing has yet to collect a victory this season. Chastain’s last victory in the Xfinity Series came on July 5, 2019 at Daytona International Speedway. Chastain leads the field in top-10 finishes this season (15). Chastain will start 11th.

Austin Cindric leads the field in points (722), top-five finishes (11) and laps led (616). His wins (three) and stage wins (seven) are second and tied for second in the field respectively. The 21-year-old for Team Penske brings familiarity to road courses, as Cindric’s first two career Xfinity wins came on road courses (Watkins Glen on Aug. 3, 2019 and Aug. 10, 2019 at Mid-Ohio). While Cindric has road course success, he has yet to achieve a victory at Elkhart Lake. In three career races at Road America, however, Cindric has finished 16th, 37th and second. Cindric will start second.

Harrison Burton is sixth in points (sixth) and leads all Xfinity rookies. The 19-year-old for Joe Gibbs Racing will start third in his debut race at Road America.

Brandon Brown currently sits above the playoff cutline (12th with 374 points), while Jeremy Clements sits below it (13thwith 342 points). Both drivers bring seven top-10 finishes combined (four for Brown and three for Clements). They will start 13th and 18th, respectively.

The race at Road America will have a modified pit-road procedure where the field will be frozen at the time of caution and will allow cars to take only fuel or tires when pit road opens.

Stages will end on lap 14, lap 29 and the finish on lap 45. Coverage for the race will begin at 12:00 p.m. EST on NBC Sports Network.
