Just days away from the start of training camp, the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets have agreed to a blockbuster trade.
The Jets will send first-team All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to the Seahawks for a first-round pick in 2021 and 2022, a third-round pick in 2021 and safety Bradley McDougald.
For the Seahawks, they acquired the perfect player to improve their defense. They were 27th in pass defense last season and in the divisional playoff round, the Seahawks were torched by Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams as he caught seven passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
This proved to be the difference in the game as they lost 28-23. They have Russell Wilson, arguably the second-best quarterback in the NFL, in his prime and they cannot afford to continue to waste him as the Packers did with Aaron Rodgers. Pass defense was the major weakness of the team last year and they just acquired a player who can change that.
Adams plays a lot like former Seahawks’ safety Kam Chancellor did with the “Legion of Boom.” They are both hard-hitting, very athletic and can be a force all over the field. Adams is a game-changer and he will bring a dynamic force to the team.
They were one missing piece away from truly contending for the Super Bowl and they just acquired it. They have many young players across the roster and the Seahawks have been skilled at acquiring gems in the later rounds of the draft. While the price was steep, they need to win now and they can with Wilson playing the way he has the last couple years.
As for the Jets, this was something they needed to take care of. It became clearer that Adams was frustrated in New York and was not going to fit in with the team at all. The Jets have had organizational dysfunction for years and it was reflected in the way they negotiated with Adams. Along with head coach Adam Gase struggling to get along well with players, this was the final straw for Adams.
They got a nice return with two-first round picks and a third-round pick. As the Jets continue to rebuild with quarterback Sam Darnold, they need all the young talent they can acquire. This will certainly help. They cannot afford to waste those picks and McDougal could be a nice piece to develop for the future.
The Jets need to use this to continue to build a future core around Darnold and the Seahawks need to make a push for the Super Bowl after this. Time will tell who won this massive trade.
