Israel Adesanya to defend middleweight title against Paulo Costa at UFC 253

First reported by Combate, UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will defend his title against No. 2 ranked middleweight Paulo Costa at UFC 253 on September 19.

This will be Adesanya’s second title defense as middleweight champion. He is undefeated in 19 fights through his mixed martial arts career. He won the middleweight title on Oct. 6, 2019 when he defeated former champion Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC 243. He made his first title defense against Yoel Romero back in March.

Costa is undefeated in 13 fights in his MMA career. Up until his last fight, which was against Romero last August at UFC 241, he had won every fight by finish (11 TKO/KO, 1 submission). This will be Costa’s first title fight and first headlining fight.

If the rumors are true, this is the second title fight added to the card as a lightweight title unification bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Justin Gaethje may also be on the card.

The card will take place on ESPN+ pay-per-view. No location has been announced for the card yet.
