RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has officially agreed to join the Premier League club Chelsea for a fee of 59 million euros. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Werner will not be allowed to officially join Chelsea and complete his medical until July after the Bundesliga season ends. After several weeks of waiting for the official announcement, Werner, himself, declared his future.
“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea; it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club,” Werner said. “I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new teammates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”
Werner indeed had a great four years at Leipzig, scoring 76 goals in 125 appearances with the club. This season has been his most productive with 32 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances. He also has led Leipzig to their best season in club history. Leipzig reached their first ever Champions League knockout round and defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 to advance to the quarterfinals before play was suspended. This is to go with a third-place run in the Bundesliga with three matches to go. While Werner will not join Leipzig in the resumption of the UCL, he already has left his mark as a club great.
This is a steal for Chelsea. They add Werner and Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech for a combined total of 99 million euros while last summer, they sold winger Eden Hazard for a fee of 100 million euros. Considering the goal-scoring ability of Werner and the playmaking of Ziyech, Chelsea are getting a nice upgrade to their club. This is also nice for Chelsea considering Hazard was 28 when he was sold and they are adding Werner and Ziyech who are 24 and 27-years-old respectively. Not only is Chelsea increasing production but also adding youth and long-term value.
If I am a Chelsea fan, I am ecstatic about the outlook of the club. This season, Chelsea is fourth in the Premier League and that is with a young squad leading the way. The three leading scorers for Chelsea are Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic. They are 21, 21 and 22-years old respectively. With these additions, Chelsea has a dangerous attack with some nice depth to go along with it. Even if these are the only two additions Chelsea makes this summer, they upgraded the club in a major way. Their attack will be dangerous with elite goal scorers and playmakers all over the front line.
They could still sign Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz among others. Havertz today liked a tweet of someone replying to Chelsea saying, “announce Havertz.” He would make their attack even more lethal and easily one of the best in Europe. However, even if Havertz goes elsewhere, watch out for Chelsea next season in the EPL.
