UFC 250 saw Amanda Nunes dominantly retain her featherweight title, Cody Garbrandt get his name back in the win column and Aljamain Sterling become the No.1 contender for a UFC Bantamweight title shot. Here are some of the fights that should be booked next following Saturday night’s event.
Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko 3
Nunes said that she would not fight again in 2020. However, the potential trilogy she could have with flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is really the last fight she needs. Shevchenko is the only woman who can match well with Nunes. Nunes can erase the bad taste that people had in their mouths following the rematch with Shevchenko and put her away cleanly to become the undisputed G.O.A.T.
Cody Garbrandt vs. Sean O’Malley
Now is the time for the UFC to start giving the “Suga Show” high-profile matchups. There is no better one to put him in than with another flashy, cocky knockout artist in the former champ Garbrandt. This would give O’Malley the win he needs to become a true contender for a bantamweight title shor or it could give Garbrandt the boost he needs to go after a second reign as champion in the 135-pound division.
Aljamain Sterling vs. winner of Petr Yan/Jose Aldo
Sterling should have been the one fighting Yan for the vacant bantamweight title and he proved it on Saturday night with a first-round submission over Cory Sandhagen. Sterling is on a five-fight winning streak and is ready for a shot at the title.
Cory Sandhagen vs. Rob Font
Sandhagen will need to take a step back to rebuild his resume and return to the top of the bantamweights. He can do that against Font who is currently on a two-fight winning streak. Font is coming off wins against Sergio Pettis and Ricky Simon, but has only fought twice since 2018.
Neil Magny vs. Vicente Luque
Magny will get his name back into the top 15 after defeating Anthony Rocco Martin Saturday night. He is now a winner in four of his last five fights and would have his highly-touted cardio tested in a potential fight with Luque. After losing to Stephen Thompson last Fall, Luque got back on track with a TKO win over Niko Price at UFC 249. This is a good matchup for two welterweights just outside the top 10.
Other fights to make:
- Alex Caceres vs. Brian Kelleher
- Ian Heinisch vs. Krzysztof Jotko
- Cody Stamann vs. John Dodson
- Alex Perez vs. Brandon Moreno
