UFC Fight Night 169: Benavidez vs. Figueiredo preview

It’s Leap Day and this is the first UFC card to ever take place on the extra day in February that come every four years. Tonight, the UFC heads to Norfolk, Virginia for a card that is headlined by a fight for the vacant UFC Flyweight title. Unfortunately, after Deiveson Figueiredo missed weight yesterday, only Joesph Benavidez can claim the belt, which will be a predicament, once again, in the division if Figueiredo gets the win tonight. Outside of this fight, this card is a sleeper and another prime example of the oversaturation of events per year for the UFC.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Deiveson Figueiredo – UFC Flyweight title fight

Benavidez has had an illustrious MMA career, but that UFC title has been the one thing separating him for legend status in the sport. At 35 years old, this is Benavidez’s last chance to make himself king of the flyweights. On a three-fight win streak, Benavidez is a well-rounded fighter that can get the win both on the feet and on the mat. Two of the three wins on this streak have come by TKO. After what we have seen from Benavidez in his most recent fights, it should be a high-octane fight as Figueiredo loves to get crazy on the feet and has engaged in some wild scrambles.

Figueiredo has only been a part of three decisions in his seven UFC bouts and has only lost one of them. If he wants to gain any respect after this weekend, he has to outclass Benavidez on the ground. Once he gets to the ground, Figueiredo is going to have to take care of business in his guard or find a way to get up quickly.

Figueiredo winning is a lose-lose situation for everyone involved in the UFC. More time without an active champion only gives UFC president Dana White more reason to get rid of the division entirely. I don’t what that. Therefore, I’m rolling with Benavidez to score another TKO victory and finally claim the belt that has evaded him for slong.

Rest of the Card:

This card is absent of any major players on it and I do not have the time to do research a bunch of up-and-coming fighters so I will just layout my picks.
