UFC 244: What Went Down In MSG

UFC 244 brought a fun and exhilarating time throughout the entire fight card. While the main event of the evening was the big draw, the rest of the competitors left it all in the cage. Since the event was stacked with strong bouts during the entire card, let’s take a look at some of the highlights throughout the night.

Preliminary Card:

Three of the four fights on the prelim card ended in a first-round knockout. It started with UFC heavyweight newcomer Jairzinho Rozenstruik, who hit his opponent Andrei Arlovski with a stiff left hand that led to a walk-off knockout.

Rising young middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan impressed once again, with a knockout of his opponent Brad Tavares in just under three minutes. This could be the fight that brings even higher billing for the 21-year-old Shahbazyan.

In the featured prelim fight, Corey Anderson brought serious energy and aggression. He rocked his opponent Johnny Walker early and kept the pressure on him. After the referee stepped in and stopped the fight, Anderson was hyped, getting into Walker’s face and climbing the cage screaming. This was a statement win for the light heavyweight fighter, and he will look to build on this in his next fight.

Main Card:

The main Card started with a bang, as Kevin Lee stepped into the cage on Saturday and delivered the knockout of the night. His opponent, Gregor Gillespie, was the victim of a vicious head kick that sat him down immediately at around the three-minute mark of the first round.

The second fight saw fan favorite, “The Black Beast” Derrick Lewis show a new side to his fighting style. He went all three rounds and was able to connect with some heavy punches like he always does. His cardio was strong here, which is something that is hard to come by in a heavyweight fight. Lewis added another win to his record book and continues to be a force in the heavyweight division.

The main event was hyped like no other. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came out with the BMF belt and would strap it around the winner. This fight had the making of fight of the year, Jorge Masvidal came out and just started pounding Nate Diaz.It seemed at times that Diaz did not have an answer for his opponent, and it showed as Diaz got cut early in the first round. We get to the championship rounds, both fighters are ready to go, talking to each other before the round starts, then the doctor steps in.

Due to the severity of the cuts around Diaz’s right eye, the doctor decided to stop the fight, which was billed as the fight to determine the ‘Baddest Mother F**er’ in the UFC, has to end on a doctor stoppage due to cuts.

It was an unfortunate thing to happen in the main event of a stacked card, but that’s the fight game sometimes. Maybe these two will fight again and the BMF title will be on the line, or maybe it will be a one-time thing. But even with the main event ending the way no one wanted to, it was still a great fight card that will be talked about for a long time.
