PSG hands Manchester United a ticket to UCL quarterfinals; Porto stuns Roma in extra time

PSG 1 – Manchester United 3(3-3 aggregate, Man U advances on away goals):

No way, no way did I believe that Manchester United could have the slightest chance of putting up three goals in Paris against PSG. This should have been a cruise for PSG as all that had to do was play normally and they failed. The Red Devils are on their way to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after sloppy play and numerous mistakes from PSG set up all three goals for Man U. Just two years after the greatest collapse in UCL history to Barcelona, PSG somehow committed the same atrocity. This time, AT HOME.

Manchester United struck first in the 2nd minute after a brutal pass from PSG defender, Thilo Kehrer, that led to Romelu Lukaku scoring on a breakaway. PSG would respond in the 12th minute on a beautiful pass by Kylian Mbappé to Bernat to put the French club up 3-1 on aggregate. It looked as though PSG was in the clear being up two goals with about an hour remaining in the match until Marcus Rashford struck a laser that 41-year old goalkeeping legend, Gianluigi Buffon let bounce off of him and Lukaku was at the right place at the right time to give Man U their second goal of the match before halftime. The match remained calm until the 84th minute when Mbappé had a chance at a breakaway goal to send PSG to the quarterfinals, but he tripped over the ball, which allowed Man U defenders and goalkeeper David de Gea to hustle back before Bernat fired the ball off the post. With all the mistakes that PSG had already committed in the match, it still looked as if they would survive. The 90th minute comes around and Man U’s Diogo Dalot fires a shot that bounces off of PSG’s Kimpembe. Dalot protested for a handball that went to be looked at by VAR. With PSG fans having flashbacks of another epic collapse, they were sweating those 90 seconds of the VAR review. The ref awards Man U a penalty kick and Rashford is able to close the show after netting the PK.

I said two months ago that Manchester United had no shot at beating PSG in Champions League and I doubled down on it after PSG’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford three weeks ago. What an absolute shocker of a result. Man U did not earn a single goal. Instead, PSG decided to make numerous errors that would lead to three goals for the Red Devils. Another disappointing UCL for PSG as all they can do now is win the French League and wait for next year’s UCL.

Porto 3 – Roma 1(Porto 4-3 aggregate, advances in extra time)

As if this round of 16 could not get any crazier, FC Porto was able to take this matchup with Roma to extra time due to having the same amount of away goals. Roma had their chances to put the match away, but could not find just one more goal. In the 117th minute, Porto was awarded a penalty kick after a clear foul in the box that was committed by Florenzi. Alex Telles would go on to nail the PK and send Porto to the quarterfinals.

We are just halfway through the second legs for the round of 16 in the UCL and Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Porto have all been eliminated. The majority of soccer/football fans around the world could not have predicted these clubs being eliminated. After today, no club can feel safe. I cannot wait for next Tuesday and Wednesday.
